Diocesan Museum of Tortona
Diocesi di Tortona
Via Seminario, 7, Tortona (AL)
Following the renovation of the rooms on the ground, first and second floors of the southern wing of the former episcopal seminary, arranged around two of the inner courtyard’s three sides, the museum itinerary is laid out on three levels, offering a themed and chronological narrative featuring several works housed in the Bishop’s Palace, in the seminary storerooms, and in the exhibition rooms of the original 2004 layout. The museum also temporarily houses other works requiring immediate protection – acquired via deposit contracts underwritten with the parishes of origin. Finally, it is home to a group of works from the municipal collections, acquired at different times from the city’s suppressed ecclesiastic buildings and channelled to its storerooms, without ever being made available to the public. These works are displayed thanks to an agreement between the diocese and the city council. The itinerary not only allows visitors an overview of the history of the diocese, but also reconstructs – using appropriate educational apparatus – the movements of the works before arriving at the storerooms, with details on their places of origin. The room housing the educational workshops is situated on the ground floor of the wing overlooking Via del Seminario, along with the reception area, front office, and bookshop. The museum – nonetheless “flexible” in its role as a dynamic collector of the diocese’s artistic heritage – takes into consideration the different identities of the three geographic areas that constitute the diocese (Oltregiogo, the Lombard area with the Vicariates of Varzi and Casteggio, and the Alessandrian area). The stand-alone display rooms on the ground floor illustrate two significant aspects of the history of the diocese, with works saved from the risk of dispersion in the 1970–80s.
The Palazzo del Seminario in Tortona houses the Diocesan Cultural Centre, comprising the Historical Archive, the Seminary Library and the Diocesan Museum (currently still under restoration).
