Gandolfino di Roreto

Gandolfino_di_roreto

Gandolfino, probably born in Asti, was the son of the painter Giovanni, and in 1493 he signed and dated the Assumption of the Virgin polyptych (Turin, Sabauda Gallery). The work shows his attention to Ligurian and Provençal models, which he later enriched with his knowledge of Lombard details, seen in his Enthroned Virgin and Child with Saints, found in the choir of Asti’s Santa Maria Nuova church. In 1501 he completed the polyptych of the Genealogy of the Virgin with Saints for Asti Cathedral, followed by polyptychs for the churches of Sant’Antonio in Casale Monferrato and the Assunta in Grignasco; a Virgin and Child, an Annunciation, and a Pietà with Saints for the church of San Pietro in Savigliano; and a Virgin and Child for the parish church of San Dalmazzo in Quargnento.
