The Sacri Monti

Sacri-monti

The Sacri Monti (Sacred Mountains) arose within the historical context of the powerful renewal set in motion by the Council of Trent. Besides being bulwarks of the Roman Faith against the Protestant Reformation, they were above all autonomous and solemn testimonies of the faith of those pilgrims who would climb them up while holding their crosses high, meditating and praying. The Sacri Monti are intended as a step-by-step journey towards freedom, involving both the body and the mind in an individual as well as a collective meditation. This journey follows a route marked by chapels dedicated to Christ's life and leading up to a shrine at the top. Each chapel is adorned with precious sculptures helping the faithful to identify with Christ's suffering.
